"Song Stories focuses on what makes music actually matter in our lives the intimate, personal memories that we often associate with our favorite songs and albums." - Aram Sinnreich, author of Mashed Up and The Piracy Crusade
Songs become a part of the story of our lives. Their lyrics linger inside of us. We recall those words, but what we remember isn't what they meant to the person who wrote them. It's what they mean to us. We relate their lyrics back to the events that have happened in our lives. What you will read in Song Stories are personal essays written by influential music professionals and independent artists about songs that impacted their lives.
Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars" set NYU professor Cortney Harding's romantic notions of adulthood, The Velvet Underground's "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" played one night at a friend's place and changed startup founder Marc Ruxin's musical tastes, and Coldplay's "Lovers in Japan" reminds music writer Caitlin Teibloom of a college breakup and who she became through that experience.
This book will deepen your understanding of music. It'll extend your interpretation of a song beyond what it means to you to how the song has been experienced by another and the meaning it has created in his or her life. Reading each story and playing the song will allow you to hear what music sounds like through ears other than your own.

Reading this book made me remember why I fell in love with music in the first place. There is a lot of variety within these pages, yet all of the stories speak to the universal power of music in our lives - the power to alter who we are, what we do with our life, or to get us through the most difficult moments. It made me remember the times that music changed my own life, and while reading many of these stories I felt that I could put myself in the authors' shoes. The stories are short, in fact, you can read each one in the time it takes to listen to the song. That makes it a book that you can easily pick up whenever you have a few minutes to spare, rather than having to commit to reading all the way through. Highly recommended for any music lovers, and it would also make a great gift!

Song Stories Music That Shaped Our Identities and Changed Our Lives edition by Kyle Bylin Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
This collection encapsulates how we all talk and think about the music that matters. It's the perfect antidote to pretentious, ambiguous music reviews from music writers prone to navel-gazing. It truly is the people's history of recent music. Kyle Bylin has done a great service to music lovers and music scenes everywhere by compiling and editing these stories.
I've loved picking out stories based on songs I know and then reading about those I don't know, and discovering the music that way.
Reading how music has touched lives in ways that I relate to, and exploring how it impacts people in ways I can't imagine.
A really lovely collection of stories.
When I listen to music I try very hard not to get caught up in the personalities and ephemeral gossip of the artists, just focusing on the pure quality of the sounds. But after reading Song Stories, I find myself pondering how the music I’m listening to might be having a deep impact on others in this moment, and allowing for the possibility that I may be more impacted than I care to recognize.
Reading these short stories (while listening to the Spotify playlist of the related tracks) has been a real treat, and a nice reminder that it’s not “just about the music” - that artists put their heart and soul into their work, and it has a profound impact on the lives of real people.
Yes, that might sound obvious, but it’s a healthy reminder in our busy, rushed, and often jaded world.
